# Only 20% of Sunscreens Meet Safety Standards

A recent review reveals that most sunscreen products fail to meet established safety benchmarks, leaving consumers vulnerable to inadequate sun protection and potentially harmful ingredients.

The analysis examined sunscreen formulations across multiple brands and found that roughly 80% fall short of safety standards. This gap stems from inconsistent ingredient quality, formulation stability, and labeling accuracy. Many products either contain undisclosed ingredients or fail to maintain the UV protection levels they advertise after exposure to heat and light.

Key concerns include the presence of chemical UV filters like oxybenzone and avobenzone, which can degrade under sun exposure and lose effectiveness. Some formulations also contain preservatives or additional compounds not clearly listed on packaging. Dermatologists recommend consumers prioritize mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which remain stable and provide broad-spectrum protection without breaking down as readily.

Regulatory oversight varies significantly by country. The FDA in the United States classifies sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug, yet enforcement of safety and efficacy standards remains inconsistent. The European Union enforces stricter requirements, which partly explains why EU-approved sunscreens often perform better in independent testing.

For shoppers, reading labels matters. Look for products that specify "broad spectrum" protection, list mineral or chemical filters clearly, and include reapplication instructions. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied every two hours or after swimming.

Third-party testing organizations have begun certifying sunscreens independently, providing additional assurance beyond manufacturer claims. Checking for these certifications before purchase can significantly reduce the risk of buying an ineffective product. Consumers should also verify that sunscreens remain unopened until purchase and store them away from extreme heat.
