# GLP-1 Drugs Like Ozempic, Wegovy May Help Lower Blood Pressure
Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists offer benefits beyond weight loss. New research shows these medications, including semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro), can reduce blood pressure in people with obesity and hypertension.
GLP-1 drugs work by slowing stomach emptying and increasing feelings of fullness, leading to reduced calorie intake and weight loss. The blood pressure reduction appears tied to this weight loss effect. When people lose weight, their cardiovascular system works more efficiently, requiring less pressure to pump blood throughout the body.
Studies demonstrate consistent blood pressure improvements. Research published in cardiovascular journals shows systolic blood pressure drops ranging from 5 to 15 millimeters of mercury (mmHg) in patients taking GLP-1 medications. For context, even a 5 mmHg reduction meaningfully lowers heart disease and stroke risk.
The mechanism involves multiple pathways. Beyond weight loss alone, GLP-1 drugs appear to have direct effects on blood vessel function and inflammation. These medications improve insulin sensitivity and reduce visceral fat, the dangerous fat stored around organs that drives hypertension.
Doctors increasingly prescribe these medications to patients with obesity and high blood pressure. Endocrinologist Richard Pratley and cardiologist Deepak Bhatt note that the dual benefits address two conditions often occurring together. Obesity increases hypertension risk significantly, so treating both simultaneously offers substantial health gains.
Patients using GLP-1 drugs should continue monitoring blood pressure regularly. Some individuals may need to adjust blood pressure medications as their weight decreases and pressure naturally falls. Stopping blood pressure drugs without
