A tick species found along Australia's east coast transmits a condition that causes sudden allergic reactions to red meat. The allergy develops after tick bites and can trigger severe, potentially life-threatening responses when people eat beef, pork, or lamb.
The culprit is the paralysis tick, which injects a protein into the bloodstream during feeding. This protein sensitizes the immune system to alpha-gal, a sugar molecule found in mammalian meat. When infected people later consume red meat, their bodies mount an allergic attack, producing reactions ranging from mild hives to anaphylaxis requiring emergency epinephrine treatment.
Cases have increased noticeably along Australia's east coast, particularly in Queensland and New South Wales. Clinicians and researchers tracking the condition emphasize public awareness about the risk. The allergic response typically develops within three to six hours of eating red meat.
