Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound, Mounjaro) may reduce binge eating episodes and improve eating behaviors in people with binge eating disorder, emerging research suggests.

The medications work by slowing gastric emptying and affecting appetite-regulating hormones in the brain. These mechanisms appear to extend beyond weight loss to address the compulsive eating patterns that define binge eating disorder, a condition affecting millions of adults who experience recurrent episodes of consuming large amounts of food while feeling a loss of control.
