The comfortable story about the replication crisis goes like this: Science got sloppy. P-hacking happened. Incentives were misaligned. Now we're fixing it with better standards, pre-registration, and statistical rigor. Problem solved, or at least acknowledged.

This narrative lets everyone sleep at night. Journals embrace transparency checklists. Universities nod approvingly at methodology courses. The conversation stays safely within "how do we do science better?"

But here's what actually breaks if we take replication seriously: the entire apparatus of how wellness and health information reaches ordinary people.

The replication crisis didn't emerge from nowhere. It emerged because journals preferentially published positive findings. Because academic careers depend on novelty, not confirmation. Because a study showing that moderate exercise helps with anxiety gets buried while one claiming a specific supplement cures it gets attention, cited everywhere, and eventually shows up in your Instagram feed as wellness gospel.

The obvious consensus says we need more rigor in research. True enough.

The better question is this: if we actually made replication standard, if we genuinely required follow-up studies before claims enter public consciousness, what happens to the wellness industry's information ecosystem?

It collapses.

Consider what currently passes for "backed by research" in wellness. A single study suggests nasal GLP-1 sprays might offer metabolic benefits. Before the ink dries, it's reframed as a trend worth monitoring. Before replication happens (if it happens), it becomes cultural shorthand. This isn't malice. This is how information moves when we've trained everyone to believe that novelty equals credibility.

The replication crisis reveals something darker than sloppiness: it reveals that our current system *requires* unreplicated findings to function. The wellness economy depends on the gap between what one study suggests and what we actually know. That gap is where marketing lives.

Real replication would slow things down catastrophically. A wellness claim would need independent confirmation before gaining traction. That confirmation might take years. It might show the original finding was wrong. The mechanism might be different than advertised. The effect size might be trivial.

News cycles can't wait for that. Social media can't wait for that. Supplement companies certainly can't wait for that.

So what actually breaks? The speed at which we convert preliminary findings into lifestyle imperatives.

The harder truth: real accountability for replication would require accepting that much of what currently circulates as wellness guidance simply doesn't qualify as established knowledge yet. It might never. That's not a bug in the system. It's a feature of how the current ecosystem generates attention and revenue.

We can have replication standards, or we can have the wellness information landscape we have now. We're choosing not to fully commit to the first because we're invested in the second.

That's not a research methodology problem. That's a structural one.
