# California's Paraquat Ban Puts Safety Against Agricultural Need

California regulators announced plans to phase out paraquat, a widely used herbicide linked to Parkinson's disease in farmworkers and agricultural communities. The decision reflects mounting evidence that the pesticide poses serious neurological risks, yet it creates immediate tension with farmers who depend on the chemical to control weeds across millions of acres.

Paraquat, a fast-acting contact herbicide, has been used in American agriculture since the 1960s. It kills weeds on contact and dries quickly, making it efficient for farming operations. But research over the past two decades has connected exposure to paraquat with increased risk of Parkinson's disease, particularly in workers with repeated contact.

The evidence comes from multiple epidemiological studies. Researchers at UC Davis and other institutions have documented elevated Parkinson's rates among agricultural workers in regions where paraquat application remains heavy. A 2011 study in Environmental Health Perspectives found that exposure to paraquat increased Parkinson's risk by approximately 2.5 times in people with certain genetic vulnerabilities. The pesticide's mechanism appears to damage dopamine-producing neurons, the brain cells affected in Parkinson's disease.

California's move aligns with international action. The European Union banned paraquat in 2007 based on similar health concerns. Brazil phased it out in 2021. But the United States has continued allowing its use, with paraquat representing roughly 15 percent of herbicide applications nationwide.

The regulatory challenge centers on what farmers will use instead. Paraquat works quickly, costs relatively little, and controls difficult weeds that other herbicides miss. Alternative chemicals exist, including glyphosate and glufosinate, but each carries its own safety questions and effectiveness limitations. Some weeds have also developed resistance to commonly used substitutes, meaning farmers face legitimate operational obstacles.

Agricultural groups have lobbied hard against the ban. The American Farm Bureau Federation and crop producer associations argue that removing paraquat eliminates a critical tool during a period of already-stressed commodity markets. Organic farming operations, which cannot use synthetic herbicides, face different constraints, but conventional farmers using paraquat say alternatives will increase costs and reduce control of resistant weeds.

California's phase-out timeline matters. The state hasn't announced specific dates, but international precedent suggests gradual transitions spanning several years. This allows farmers time to adjust planting strategies, invest in alternative equipment, or shift to resistant crop varieties. Research institutions, including UC Davis, continue developing new weed management approaches.

The paraquat decision also reflects California's broader agricultural health record. The state has tracked pesticide-related illnesses for decades, building data on farmworker exposures. Public health advocates point out that farmworkers, many of them immigrant laborers, face disproportionate chemical exposure without comparable protections afforded to urban populations.

Neurological diseases in farming communities carry economic weight beyond individual cases. Parkinson's disease requires lifelong treatment and care, creating healthcare costs that often fall on workers' compensation systems and public health programs. Preventing exposure prevents both human suffering and downstream healthcare burden.

For farmers, the transition requires both time and support. Some need technical assistance to implement alternative weed management strategies. Others may need financial assistance during the adjustment period. The regulatory pathway ahead will determine whether California's phase-out becomes a template for other states or remains an isolated regional action.
