Scientists examining aging populations discovered that people consuming less protein showed better markers of longevity and disease prevention. The research examined dietary patterns across multiple cohorts, tracking how protein consumption related to lifespan, metabolic health, and age-related disease development.
The mechanism appears linked to how the body processes amino acids. When protein intake decreases below typical Western diet levels, cells activate autophagy, a cellular cleaning process that removes damaged components. This cellular maintenance system strengthens as we age, potentially slowing the aging process itself.
