The most significant research came from a 1998 study by Andrew Wakefield published in The Lancet, which initially suggested a connection between the MMR vaccine and autism. The medical community later retracted the study after finding serious flaws in the research methodology and discovering undisclosed financial conflicts of interest. Wakefield lost his medical license in the United Kingdom.

Since then, research involving millions of children has repeatedly confirmed vaccine safety. A 2019 Danish study of over 650,000 children found no association between the MMR vaccine and autism. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the World Health Organization, and major medical organizations maintain that vaccines are among public health's greatest achievements. They continue recommending routine childhood vaccination schedules based on extensive safety monitoring and efficacy data accumulated over decades.
