Prosperity Organic Foods Inc. initiated a voluntary recall of 1,304 cases of Miyoko's Creamery Organic European Style Plant Milk Butter in September due to potential contamination with yeast, mold, and E. coli. On October 23, the FDA designated the recall as Class II, meaning the affected butter "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences." The affected products were distributed to stores in 10 states.

The FDA has not reported any illnesses associated with the recall. Consumers should check their refrigerators for the recalled product and avoid eating it. Those who have already consumed the butter and have health concerns should contact a doctor.

Mold contamination in food can cause shortness of breath, nausea, fever, or diarrhea, according to Cleveland Clinic. Certain strains of E. coli bacteria can cause digestive upset, including bloody or watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The safest action is to throw away the recalled butter or return it to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
