Your body needs some UV exposure. Sunlight triggers vitamin D production in skin cells, a nutrient essential for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. Most people need 10 to 30 minutes of midday sun exposure several times weekly to maintain adequate vitamin D levels, depending on skin tone and latitude.
The problem emerges with excessive exposure. UV radiation damages DNA in skin cells, creating mutations that lead to melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. The damage accumulates over time, meaning repeated sun exposure compounds your risk even after years pass.
Protection strategies depend on UV Index levels. On days when the index reaches 3 or higher, dermatologists recommend applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. One ounce of sunscreen covers your entire body, a quantity most people underapply.
Physical barriers offer additional protection. Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest. Wear lightweight, tightly woven clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses that shield the delicate eye area. Rash guards designed for water sports provide excellent coverage while swimming.
Your skin tone affects UV sensitivity differently. Darker skin produces more melanin, offering natural protection, but skin cancer still develops in people of color and often goes undiagnosed longer because physicians and patients overlook it. Everyone, regardless of ethnicity, needs sun protection.
