# Cardiologists Recommend Simple Add-On Test for Better Cholesterol Assessment

Cardiologists are pushing for a straightforward addition to standard cholesterol screening that provides more detailed insight into heart disease risk than traditional tests alone.

The test in question measures lipoprotein(a), often called Lp(a), a genetic form of cholesterol that many people carry without knowing it. Standard lipid panels check total cholesterol, LDL (bad cholesterol), HDL (good cholesterol), and triglycerides, but they skip Lp(a) entirely.

Here's why this matters. Elevated Lp(a) levels significantly increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, independent of other cholesterol numbers. Someone with otherwise healthy cholesterol readings can still face serious cardiovascular risk if their Lp(a) is high. The American Heart Association now recommends that all adults have their Lp(a) measured at least once in their lifetime, typically during early adulthood.

The test itself is inexpensive and straightforward. It requires just a blood sample, the same draw used for routine cholesterol panels. Results tell you whether you carry genetic predisposition toward elevated Lp(a), which tends to run in families. Unlike LDL cholesterol, which responds to diet and exercise, Lp(a) levels are largely determined by genetics and don't change much with lifestyle modifications.

Knowing your Lp(a) status allows cardiologists to make more targeted prevention decisions. If your number is high, doctors may recommend more aggressive medication strategies, closer monitoring, or earlier intervention for other risk factors. This personalized approach prevents unnecessary treatments for those with low risk and ensures high-risk patients get appropriate care.

The test has remained underutilized, partly because it wasn't routinely offered and many patients didn't know to ask
