Permanent daylight saving time offers evening light but creates a genuine tradeoff that affects health and productivity, according to research on the nation's twice-yearly clock shifts.
The appeal is straightforward. Year-round daylight saving time extends evening daylight into winter months, potentially boosting mood, reducing traffic accidents, and cutting energy costs. But the cost arrives in the morning. Under permanent DST, winter sunrises would occur after 8 a.m. across much of the country, disrupting the body's internal clock when it needs morning light most.
Chronobiologists have documented real consequences. The American Academy of Pediatrics warns that late winter sunrises interfere with children's sleep schedules and school performance. Researchers studying the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which extended DST by four weeks, found no meaningful reduction in electricity use. Instead, they discovered increased energy consumption in some regions due to greater air conditioning demand in early evening hours.
The sleep disruption carries measurable costs. When the U.S. springs forward each March, emergency rooms see spikes in heart attacks and strokes in the following days. Studies from the University of Alabama and other institutions document increased traffic accidents and workplace injuries during the transition week. Permanent DST would eliminate the twice-yearly shift adjustment, but replacing standard time with year-round DST locks people into a schedule misaligned with sunrise timing.
Standard time actually aligns better with human biology. Morning light exposure regulates circadian rhythms, suppresses melatonin production, and improves alertness. The later winter sunrises of permanent DST work against these natural processes.
The alternative receiving growing support from sleep researchers involves making standard time permanent year-round. This preserves early morning sunlight during winter while still providing evening daylight during summer months, though less extreme than DST.
