# Belly Fat May Predict Heart Disease Risk Better Than BMI
Body mass index has long served as the standard metric for assessing health risk, but emerging research suggests belly fat distribution offers a more accurate picture of heart disease vulnerability.
A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference found that abdominal fat accumulation independently predicts cardiovascular outcomes, even in people with normal BMI scores. Researchers measured visceral adiposity—fat stored around internal organs—and discovered it correlated more strongly with heart disease risk than overall weight calculations.
"BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and it ignores where fat is stored," explains the research team. Visceral fat, the type that collects deep in the abdomen, releases inflammatory compounds and affects how the body processes glucose and cholesterol. This metabolic disruption increases heart attack and stroke risk regardless of someone's overall weight.
The distinction matters clinically. A person with a normal BMI but significant belly fat faces elevated cardiovascular danger. Conversely, some people classified as overweight by BMI standards may have better metabolic health if their weight comes from muscle or distributes evenly.
Cardiologists increasingly recommend measuring waist circumference alongside or instead of BMI. For men, waist measurements above 40 inches and for women above 35 inches indicate elevated risk. Other practical assessments include waist-to-hip ratio, which compares abdominal size to hip circumference.
The research reinforces what exercise physiologists have long observed: regular physical activity reduces belly fat specifically, even without dramatic weight loss. Moderate aerobic exercise combined with resistance training shifts body composition by burning visceral fat while preserving muscle.
